Best Dang Beans You Ever Ate!!!

It has been a while since I posted, but it is about time.  What better than to share something useful and helpful.  I am going to share a recipe today.  I believe that too many times today people take the “easy path” in preparing a meal.  They think that a package of hamburger helper or can of pre-baked beans is the way to go.

The truth is that these methods are not very flavorful or nutritious and they are actually more expensive and take the same time to prepare as something from scratch.  I will share from time to time a few recipes that I will invent because I frequently scavenge the cupboards and will use what is available.  A little of this, a little of that and before you know it you gotsome de lish foods…

Cooking is not an exact science.  (Baking on the other hand is…)  You really can’t mess things up when cooking as long as you don’t burn things.  There are several easy rules to remember that will give you great results every-time.  I will make that a separate post.  But for today here is the recipe for the Best Dang Beans you ever ate!  I know I know you’re thinking beans aren’t gourmet or strikingly great in any way.  I would tell you that if you start with a basic food such as beans and work your way up the food chain you can’t go wrong.  Beans are food staples the world wide.  Even here in America the Chuck wagon was based on beans.

The way I will teach the recipe is a little different.  I use terms like dash, pinch, a bit, and couple spoons etc.  The reason is as stated before it’s not an exact science.  Experiment see exactly what shade you like.  These go great with a barbecue!!!

 What is needed?

  • 1 medium onion chopped in 1/2″  pieces
  •  4 cloves of garlic, smashed then minced
  • Bit of Paprika
  • Pinch of Cumin
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Couple shakes of Red pepper flakes
  • 2-3 spoonfuls of Cocoa Powder… yes cocoa powder
  • 3 big squirts of Mustard
  • A mound of brown sugar… 1/4- 1/3 cup depends on how sweet you want it.
  •  2 Standard size cans of Beans doesn’t matter what kind I used white northern beans (You can soak and cook your own beans if you want just add a few hours 🙂 hehe.)
  • Salt n’ Peppa to taste Couple grinds of each (Yes I grind my own salt from a Tasty Sea salt.  More about salt in another post.)

How do I put it together you ask?

  1. Chop onion, place in medium size pot with butter about medium high this will allow the onions to caramelize.  Onions will take about 5 minutes to get a golden color.  They will be almost see through and soft when they are done.
  2. While the onions are going, smash up garlic and chop into small pieces.  Just before the onions are done add the garlic and stir.  Let the garlic cook a bit.
  3. Add all the spices, then sugar and mustard.   It should smell very good right about now.  Stir until there are no lumps, The sugar and mustard will start to bubble.  That is a good sign.
  4. Give the onions and spices one last good stir then add your beans.  Try whatever you have.  Northern white or Pinto work well.  Give a good stir.  Add salt n Peppa to taste.  When the beans start to spit.  Turn down the heat to low and let em sit while everything else in your meal is prepared.  You could put them in a crock put and cook em all day if you want.  Or just until the beans are hot.

These beans can be made in advanced and reheated as needed.  Give em a try.  The chocolate adds good flavor trust me…  Let me know how they turned out!!!
